The boys were immediately placed in the NICU, and we were repeatedly told how amazingly well they were doing for being 35 weekers. Boys usually tend to develop more slowly than girls, so for being boys they were doing exceptional.
They quickly came off oxygen and feeding tubes, and the only thing they needed to work on was eating more quickly. If it takes a preemie too long to eat, with each feeding they become more and more tired, and many times become too tired to eat and function on their own. Often times they’ll end up back in the NICU. So the goal was to have the boys eat 2 oz. every three hours in 30 minutes. Cannon always fed at the hour, and Cruiz at the half hour (Right before Cannon came home on day 9, they switched them, not sure why)
Cruiz seemed to be doing better than Cannon, and we were told there was a good chance he would go home before Cannon. He’s always eaten better than Cannon from the beginning.
After being there a week, they performed their car seat challenge. The boys had to be able to stay in their car seat for 90 minutes without any problems. They first tested Cruiz, and he lasted 45 minutes when they pulled him out and placed him on oxygen, which he has stayed on ever since. Cannon passed without any problems.
Friday the 26th, and day 9 in the NICU, Cannon was discharged without his brother. (The opposite than what everyone thought would happen) Doctors repeatedly kept telling us they thought Cruiz would only be a few days behind because he was on very little oxygen, but every time they try to wean him off, he just can’t quite make it. He’s currently on 23% oxygen, and needs to be down to 21% for 24 hours in order to be discharged.
The boys went about a week without seeing each other. I brought Cannon back up for a visit, and Cruiz snuggled right in. It really is amazing to watch these two together.
Today is Day 20 in the NICU for little Cruizer, and I think it’s safe to say we’re both exhausted. I’ve been blessed to be able to visit Cruiz every single day, Pat’s been incredible and usually takes on Ledger and Cannon while I visit. I’ve been trying to pump, but for whatever reason I have struggled making milk. I’ve worked a lot with the lactation consultant, and have been told it’s not uncommon for moms to struggle making milk while kids are in the NICU, or are stressed. Finding babysitters, leaving a newborn to visit a newborn, driving 20 minutes to the hospital, and trying to find time to pump during the day is exhausting.
We asked last week if Cruiz could come home on oxygen and we were told they wouldn’t consider it until he was at least a month old. So unless he improves soon, we’re looking at possibly bringing him home next week.
I wish I had pictures of everyone who visited and took time to feed the boys. My Aunts went out of their way to take the 10 PM shift, we are so blessed to have so much family around to help. And a big thank you to the many nurses we’ve worked with. Our boys were certainly in good hands.
C’mon Cruiz, let’s get out of here!
The picture of your two little sweet babies all snuggled up is one of the sweetest things I have ever seen. You're doing wonderfully- you amaze me! Congratulations on the beautiful additions. You certainly have 4 beautiful children!
ReplyDeletePraying, praying, praying for you all to be reunited soon! I can't even begin to imagine how hectic life is with two children at home, one at the hospital, trying to recover from giving birth etc. You look absolutely amazing!!! :) Hang in there...lots of prayers coming your way from a total stranger who has followed your story since I learned of your sweet Preslee!
ReplyDeleteWe spent 10 days in the NICU with our first (a 34.5 weeker) and it was the hardest thing I've ever done (and I didn't have any other babies!!!). Lots of prayers for you to get your little man home sooner rather than later. Aren't the nurses in those places amazing?
ReplyDeleteOh you must be exhausted but they are are cute! The picture of them snuggled and smiling is priceless.
ReplyDeleteBoth boys are SO precious. Hope Cruize gets to come home soon. Thanks for sharing them with us!
ReplyDeleteThat black and white picture melts my heart! I am so happy for you and will be praying Cruiz gets to come home soon!!
ReplyDeleteYour boys are so precious. You two are amazing parents. Your family are in our prayers. What a beautiful family you have. <3
ReplyDeleteWe got lucky with our first. I had preterm labor at 32 weeks so I had the steroid shots. I think they were a miracle. I delivered at 35 weeks and she was great health wise (no NICU). She had some trouble maintaining body temp but without any fat, what are you gonna do? :) We had to feed her every couple of hours and get her trained to eat but it worked out in the end. She turned 7 on Sunday and is great!
ReplyDeleteMy second was born at 37 weeks (or at the tail end of 36 and 5 days depending on which doctor you asked - LOL). We thought we'd make it to 39 and so no steroid shots. She ended up in the NICU for a week or so. I really thought it would be harder (she had to be transported to a different hospital). It wasn't easy, but I tried to use that time to recuperate from my c-section. Luckily, I had a friend that worked in that NICU and a friend in L&D that could report back to me what was happening.
I pumped for an entire year with both of my girls. It was slow with the NICU baby but you definitely have to relax a little (I know, better said than done), get as much rest as possible, and plenty of fluids. I could tell the difference by an ounce or two when I was not doing those things. It was so worth it in the end. I have faith that it will all come together! You can do it! And congrats on the babies. I am glad they are doing so well!

Ashley, I read your blog most days and you are an incredible person. Your babies are precious, praying for your family. Praying that Cruize will come home soon.
ReplyDeleteHi Ashley,
ReplyDeleteI have been reading your blog for years now but have never commented (I think because I felt I didn't have much to add.) I am always amazed at your strength and faith. Congrats on the boys! They are adorable. I have 3 boys myself and they are a roller coaster of fun. :) I had major nursing issues with my 9 month old so I thought I might pass along a few things that worked for me...Make sure you are eating a lot of protein and drinking lots of water as those things are needed to make milk. I also took Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle 3 pills, 3 times a day to up production. I found that if I took a few minutes and took some deep breaths before pumping that helped with let down as well. Nursing is hard! I had to really work for a good month with pumping and nursing every 2 hours to get my milk where I needed it to be (my baby had major latching issues as well.) Anyway, you can do it! It is overwhelming when you are exhausted and stressed but SO worth it! Congrats again!! I hope your little sweetie makes it home soon. :)
Summer
That is so good they both developed so well being so early.. We are praying Cruiz gets to come home soon! What a fun/crazy time ;)
ReplyDeleteOh my....those two are so cute. The video is beyond precious. I love how he responds to your voice and is so bright eyed. Prayers for little Cruiz and Cannon too. They are beautiful. Hang in there and hope Cruiz is home soon. Take care!!
ReplyDeleteOur twins were in the NICU for 31 days. It was so long. They were born at 31 wks 2 days. It was so exhausting to be there. I too had a really hard time keeping up with them in the milk department. They were supplementing some formula to help me out. I only hung in there for 10 weeks nursing. My girls had reflux and it was hard to nurse them at the same time because of their vomiting problem. I hope you are able to take him home soon.
ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed reading your blog, watching for your twins arrival. I have 5 year old twin boys and 9 year old twins also. Both sets spent time in the NICU, and my daughter came home a month before her brother. It is such an emotional, stressful, difficult, and sweet time. I love the picture of the reunion, so precious! I just wanted you to know people are praying for you. You are an amazing example of strength to many.
ReplyDeleteI also wanted to let you know that, although its busy and stressful and exhausting, being a twin mom is a wonderful blessing. I was not able to breast feed mine and if that's how it works out, they will be just fine! I have 4 healthy kids to prove it! :) (side benefit: dad can help feed at night, just saying)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us. They are adorable!
You look amazing! So glad that Cruiz was able to come home and join his 2 brothers!
ReplyDeleteThey are such pretty babies. I am sorry that it has to be such a stressful time and glad that you are supported by your friends and family. When the boys are older, you will look back and you will be so proud. You are exhausted, but no wonder, you have done a great great job with carrying these two. You are a wonderful mother. Lucky boys !!!
ReplyDeleteThey are such beautiful babies! I'm praying that wee Cruiz will be home real soon. I think he will thrive next to his brother. Thank you so much for taking time to share your boys with us!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, you sure do make gorgeous babies! They are precious! I love their names. I'm pretty sure Kevin James son is named Cannon but with a K:) My oldest son is called Michael and in high school he always complained that I gave him such a boring name lol.
ReplyDeleteI hope all your little men are home with you soon with your sweet Angel watching over you all from up above!
What sweet babies. :)
ReplyDeletethey are so adorable!!! congrats again! Maybe you have herd of this or maybe not, I didnt until just this last baby I had, he is 5 months old now and from a month old I have had to just pump for him and i was having a hard time getting/keeping a good supply and my doctor asked if i had ever been on REGLAN and i hadnt ever herd of it...so she gave me some and it was AMAZING for my milk I started pumping an extra 2 oz every pump...if all else fails maybe try that!!!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could reach out over blog world and just give you a huge hug of encouragement. As someone who was in your exact place not too long ago, I know exactly how you feel. Margo was 17 months old when the boys were born, both went to NICU, Harris came home before Hayes and Hayes stayed much longer. We don't even have any pictures of bringing Harris home bc I was so heart broken over leaving Hayes in the NICU. I so remember the stress of taking care of my big baby and my preemie baby at home and then having to make it up to the hospital in time to nurse Hayes, right after I finished nursing Harris at home. I was just in survival mode for so long. But the best thing ever was bringing Hayes home and reuniting him and Harris. (Our hospital wouldn't let us bring Harris back up to visit Hayes.) I just felt like there was this huge hole in my heart that wouldn't be filled until we brought him home. So on the morning that we came home with Hayes, I swaddled them together and stood over their bassinet, just weeping! It ended in JOY and yours will too!
ReplyDeleteSome of the best tips I can give you on pumping and nursing will be 1) I'm sure they've told you this, but when pumping, try to pump where you can see Cruiz (or Cannon) or hold one if you can. Those hormones will work in your favor. :) And 2) Oatmeal every morning for breakfast. If you don't like oatmeal, put 1/2 oats in a strawberry-yogurt smoothie. It worked wonders. And finally 3) Pump, pump, pump. Or nurse, nurse, nurse. A hands free nursing bra was the only way I could pump so much. I seriously pumped while I made dinner, put Margo in her highchair, fed her, did laundry, etc. It was quite the scene! :) You can always contact me if you have any questions. (thru my blog) Prayers for you and this stage of life. And hoping that Cruiz comes home so very soon!
Something I was told to try with my last baby was to use Fenugreek-- it's a natural supplement that really helps with the production of milk. You can find it at a Whole Foods or in he health-food aisle. They've been using it since biblical times. You can always ask your doctor about it if you are unsure. That and drink LOTS and LOTS of water! Good luck! I hope you are able to get it worked out-- that sounds VERY stressful and hard! Very cute babies, though :). Congrats!
ReplyDeleteAshley the boys are so cute and you look beautiful! So happy for your little family and I know Preslee is close by keeping Cruiz company:)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your twins! I have read your blog for a long time and I love your perspective and how you share your experiences. My twins are 6.5 months... It's hard reading about those first few weeks and remembering how difficult it all was... Especially having one baby in the nicu and one released. I remember the first time I got to hold them at the same time. It was like a void in my heart filled. And that was how it felt to have all my kids at home finally. Keep the updates coming even though you are busy! You've got a lot of strangers who care about your family!
ReplyDeleteHow awesome! You are AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, your entire family rocks!!!!
