I read an article about drowning over the weekend, and I’ve thought about it a lot. In the future I hope to become more educated in this area, along with becoming certified in CPR. Right now it still hits too close to home for me, but hopefully sooner rather than later I’ll be able to do what I need to do.
I thought I’d share the article since summer has arrived and many of us spend hours in the water.
Thanks Ashley for sharing. This article is so true, and as summer approaches and everyone goes to the beach or back yard pools, it is nesassary to know what to watch for.
ReplyDeleteYears ago my job was working with kids in a water environment and I know how easily things can go wrong.
Yes you do need to take first aid and CPR training, but you and Pat need to do it when you are ready.
This is crazy. My SIL and I were just talking about this the other day before my niece and nephews came over to swim at my house. Shortly after, my nephew was caught by my neighbor (thankfully) bobbing up and down in the water trying to stay at the surface. It really was crazy because he's such a busy kid we would have normally thought he was just playing crazy! Thank goodness that others watch out for others.
ReplyDeletewonderful article!
ReplyDeleteGreat article! I ready it the other day and it is useful information!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the article. my oldest son drowned in 1999 at the age of 19 , so it hit home even thou we were 500 miles away when it happened.. we worry so much about our granddaughters, as we have a pond behind our house and watch them like a hawk... even thou it was 14 years ago it still is hard when someone talks about drownings or see stuff on tv....thank you again.. I am going to copy it.....is that ok>
ReplyDeleteThat's fine. I'm sorry to learn about your son. I totally understand. I know Pat and I will always be super cautious around water. My parents have a pond, and Pat's dad has the canal, so I never fully relax while outside anymore.
DeleteMy sisters friend's brother died in an accidental drowning, as well. I think he was around Preslee's age too. I never knew that a drowning as "calm" and not hectic! Thank you for teaching me something new! My neighbors have a pool in their yard and I am always glancing over to make sure everyone is okay in there.
ReplyDeleteWhen you sign up I'll do the same here in CA!!!! All I wanted to do after my neighbors son drowned was to go learn CPR. I haven't been able to bring myself to go. I'm afraid I'll lose it in class. Maybe I just need to let that happen if it's going to happen. I'll be a big girl with you. Thanks for posting the article.
ReplyDelete:) I know the feeling. I'll let you know!
Deletewow what a great article. thank you for sharing! i am posting on facebook. hopefully, we can all save lives with this knowledge. in preslee's honor...
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteThat is great information! I shared it on Facebook. I always have anxiety taking my boys (ages 4 and 3) to the beach to swim! They are taking swim classes that summer so hopefully that will help me :)
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and am always amazed by your insights and strength.
ReplyDeleteI recently took an infant and child CPR and first aid course. The instructor came to my girl friends home 2 evenings and it was just a small intimate setting where we could focus on personal experiences and the training the 5 of us were wanting to feel more secure as parents. Maybe look into an option like that!
That sounds great! I'll have to look if they do that around here. Thank you!
DeleteI too read this article and found it very informative. Have you ever heard of "dry drowning?" this is something I just discovered and it scared the bajeesus out of me!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this article. I sent it to my daughters. One of them has a three-and-a-half year old and is 8 months pregnant with her second child. She has had recurring nightmares ever since he was born about him drowning. He has completed three swimming lesson sessions and she plans on enrolling him again this fall in the next course. We can never be too educated in that area. I would like for all members of our family to take infant/child CPR classes soon. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteAshley,
ReplyDeleteAs a mother who has also lost my first born child...this hits home for me. I am so grateful to have found out about swim lessons for my son. They are self rescue swim lessons....you should look into them for your cute little boy. You would NOT be disappointed. www.infantswim.com
Thank you for posting this. A 2 year old little girl (with a life vest on) feel into our local pool yesterday. Her mother jumped in (with clothes on) to save her. She didn't look like she was drowning, and I assumed that her life vest would help her. They ended up doing CPR on her. She's fine now... but I felt so foolish in thinking, "she's fine, she's not drowning." This article hit home for me, and is much appreciated!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting this information! I have 3 young children and I'm grateful for and info that will help me keep them a little safer.
