On Monday I had my 27 week appointment, along with a glucose screening for gestational diabetes. My last two pregnancies I passed the glucose screening with flying colors, but this time I failed. They asked me to reschedule in the next few days for a 3 hour test.
I went in fasting Tuesday morning had 10 minutes to drink a glucose drink, which was twice as concentrated than the one I drank the day before – yuck! I had to wait three hours, and every hour they tested my blood sugar levels, I passed one, failed two, which means I officially have gestational diabetes. Ugh.
Life just became more hectic. Along with two growing babies (I’m now measuring 36 weeks) and kidney stones, (I’ve passed 6 this pregnancy) I now need to stay on a strict diet, keep a log, and test my blood sugar levels 4 times a day. Gestational diabetes often creates large babies, so I now have weekly Dr. appointments with more ultrasounds. I’m exhausted just typing it all out.
But I’d rather focus on the good news.
The ultrasound showed both babies looking healthy. One baby is measuring in the 74th percentile, and the other in the 72nd. They both weigh about 2 1/2 lbs each.
Baby A is still a show off, and makes it easy for the tech to take profile pictures. He’s still head down on my right side. Baby B has flipped and is curled up in a ball with his back facing us, making it nearly impossible to get any pictures. Dr. M says as long as Baby A is head down, a vaginal delivery is still an option.
My goal this week is to learn what I can eat and get used to pricking my finger 4 times a day. I’m trying to focus on the fact in 10 weeks we’ll have two sweet baby boys in our arms, who by the way, are still nameless
P.S. Thank you for your concern about my iron level, my results came back normal.
Hi Ashley, First of all I love reading the positivity and love that comes through your blog. I also wanted to send mommy hugs as I had gestational diabetes with my first and am pregnant with my second and have already started testing. It is rough but totally possible. The best advice I got was from another nursing friend who told me "if you eat a carb of any kind just make sure you pair it with a protein!"
ReplyDeleteBest of Luck to you and your prayers for your growing family!

I got kidney stones twice while pregnant with my daughter and we used ALOT of lemon juice to water ratio to break them up. But since then I drink lemon juice in my water regularly and so far they haven't come back? Just a suggestion :) those dang things are worse than labor in my opinion!
ReplyDeleteYou look great!
ReplyDeleteI am sorry about having gestational diabetes.
I can't wait to see pictures of your 2 beautiful and healthy baby boys.
Praying for you!! I had GD with 2 of my pregnancies and it is no fun! You'll find out quickly by checking your levels what makes yours go high & what you can tolerate. For me, milk made my sugar levels rise, so I had to limit dairy. It's a lot of work, but necessary. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the encouragement! That's what I'm hoping.
DeleteYou look fabulous! I love the new blog layout too :) Sorry to hear about gestational diabetes. Hang in there, in no time you'll have two precious babies to love on! Good luck finding out how to eat right during this pregnancy!
ReplyDeleteGoing in for my glucose test next week...hoping for good results that still allow me to eat ice cream! I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to be uncomfortable with two babies, always hungry, kidney stones, and on a strict diet! AAAAH! Good luck with the names also, it is so hard to name babies! Since I am having our 4th girl and only have one boy I'll share a few of my favorites...Sawyer, Marshall, Mack, Nielson (I think my husband thinks the name choices I like for boys is why we weren't sent anymore, he hates all the names I like!) And, since dreaming of two babies, I think you can also dream about being in the same room with Pres...I am sure she will be sending her brothers to you with lots of hugs and wouldn't miss their birth for anything! Big sisters take their role very seriously, I bet she is so excited to be helping in special ways we can't really comprehend.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your screening! And thank you for your sweet comment, it made me cry.. good tears, the thought of Preslee being there, I think you are right :)
DeleteYou are a hard working mama! Lots of prayers and blessings for you. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteYou look amazing! Good luck with your last few weeks, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
ReplyDeleteI had gestational diabetes with my 3rd pregnancy also. It takes a week or two to get used to the diet and finger pricking but then it just becomes habit. Good luck and before you know it your sweet babies will be in your arms.
ReplyDeleteI love reading your blog. You are so optimistic and inspiring. :) I hope you can feel all of us around the world cheering for your little family.
ReplyDeleteBoo for gestational diabetes! But yeah that you have 10 weeks left! I hope it goes quickly for you. Seriously though, you are rocking the "27 weeks pregnant with twins" look. You look great!
ReplyDeleteMy mom had g.d. when she was pregnant with my sister. I was only 5 at the time so I don't remember much, but I do remember her pricking her finger every day. I don't remember if she was a big baby, but she is tall now, at age 21. She was a basketball player until the day she graduated from high school! Mom's g.d. went away after my sister was born :)
ReplyDeleteI had GD with James. Once you get used to it, it's not too bad. Breakfast was the hardest meal, I was used to pancakes every morning, so I had to settle for eggs (drowned in salsa and cheese) and plain yougurt with strawberries and a little bit of grape nuts. Just pair everything with cheese or peanut butter, and you'll do great. So excited for you! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Breakfast tip! I too love my pancakes, but that seems manageable.
DeleteI'm so sorry! I just got diagnosed a couple weeks ago. It's a tough transition meet with a dietitian and really get the down low. We will make it we just may have a blander diet. If you need any help with meals or carb schedules write me at Jacqueline.clark@live.com.
ReplyDeleteI had g.d. with my last baby. Try drawing your blood from your bicep in your arm. It is so much better. I couldn't handle poking my finger and asked my dietician if I could poke anywhere else. She said anywhere is fine. It wouldn't hurt to try. Or it might. haha.
ReplyDeleteThe other crazy thing, is right after I had my baby, my blood sugar was tested. And it was completely back to normal. And my baby was just fine too. I still am amazed at that.
Also my baby was average sized.
Thanks for all the positive comments! That's crazy it was back to normal that quick, hopefully I'll have the same experience.
DeleteTotally feel for ya on the gestational diabetes! I don't fit the profile at all and was super suprised to get it with my 2nd pregnancy. I thought it was the worst possible thing when it happened. So not fun, but you adjust and get used to it. Still not fun tho. I always felt hungry, plus having a busy toddler made it difficult to remember to take my blood sugar and everything. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteSo exciting as the delivery is getting closer .....cant wait to see your little blessings...
ReplyDeleteI had GD with my first baby, and after you get the hang of what to eat and what to stay away from, it gets a lot easier and you feel a lot better too! I also went to Dr. M and the dietician at that office at the time was very helpful with any questions I had. It's not as horrible as you're thinking it will be as long as you keep your levels at a good range. Hope everything goes smoothly for you! :)
ReplyDeleteI have follwed you, for a while now. You have really inspired me. Im a newborn photographer, and would love to give you a special deal. Please contact me, by call or messaging. 801.529.5943

I always thought Parker was a cute boys name!
ReplyDeleteYou look gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteBoo!! No more sno cones for you. But for reals, that's a huge bummer!! At least these boys won't pass down the kidney stone gene of when they're pregnant we'll because they can't :)
ReplyDeleteHmmm... my first thoughts. But I'll have to give sugar free flavors a try for the first time.
DeleteAs I was reading your blog my husband walked in and goes, "Who is that? She is hot!" lol. Made me smile cause every pregnant girl needs to hear that! I am sorry you have diabetes, I hate taking my sugar levels!
ReplyDeleteHaha, that was nice of him. And I agree, every huge prego girl needs to hear nice things :)
DeleteI had gestational diabetes with jus one baby inside, so I can't imagine what it's like with 2!! My best advice for it is to go straight to the proteins and veggies. I ate eggs for breakfast, salad for lunch and meat and veggies for dinner. Kept carbs under 30grams in the morning and under 60 for lunch and dinner, however with two babies your insulin may be nt working at all. Hopefully you don't have to shoot up! No fun'
DeleteI just had twins 3 weeks ago and it was a vaginal delivery. My baby A was head down and my baby B was transverse, but my doctor was able to deliver them using a sonogram machine to track Baby B's movements after Baby A was born. My twins are fraternal, though, so they had different sacs. It might be more complicated if they are in the same sac. Either way, a vaginal delivery is totally possible! Good luck, I can't wait to see pictures of them!
ReplyDeleteI tried many many different diapers before I decided on these. I like them because (1) they are the only ones out of all the others that I tried that held everything in and were super-absorbant for nighttime and (2) fit my big baby better than their same size competitors. If you have a large baby, these fit well. My baby also used to poop right out of other diapers and these actually contain it!

Hi, I'm sorry you're having difficulties...you look very pretty being pregnant. Could you please put a link to my daughters blog? She has a link to your blog on her site. She lost her 2 yr old son a year ago, he drowned in her washing machine. As you well know, she is having a hard time & needs some extra support from other moms. I would appreciate it. She lives far from me & anything I can do to help her heal, I will. Her name is Tiffany & her son is Ollie. her blog address is

I'm so sorry for the loss of your precious daughter. Your beautiful angel.
Oh goodness, I had GD with my babies as well. It really is not so bad once you get than hang of the diet.....probably how we should ALL be eating anyway! The one good thing was that my babies continued to gain after 28 weeks, but my body did not, thanks to the healthy eating!!!
ReplyDeleteI just came across your blog...I'm another twin mom. My husband and I have twin boys who are 18 months and a soon to be 3 year old daughter. I have to say, you're a way cuter pregnant with twins momma than I was! :) I have a blog if you want to follow it...I documented the whole pregnancy week by week if you're interested. I know I loved looking at other twin mom's blogs, and I still do!
ReplyDeleteCongrats and good luck!

I googled and found you. This blog entry really hit home for me, considering I just took my 1 hour test (which I scored the same score as the cutoff) and I'm now waiting to hear back from my doctor to see if I need to take the 3 hour test. I'm 27 weeks pregnant with b/g twins. Thank you for talking about this issue, it makes it nice that there are others in my position. Although I understand it's more common with twin pregnancies to have GD, it still sucks. Hopefully things are going well for you now!
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't have to go back in and take the 3 hour test! But if you do have GD, don't be too hard on yourself. I was, but it has gotten better. I feel better, and its reassuring the twins will be much healthier if I follow the diet. But I must admit I sure do crave foods that I can't have :)
