I hope you all had a fantastic Halloween! Ours was a little more low key than usual, with Ledger still not feeling too great, but we still had fun. I've struggled accomplishing everything I need to with a little boy who refuses to sleep, but our Halloween post is coming soon. Ledger is getting better each and every day, and I wanted to post about our past two weeks before I forget the details.
Ledger refused to eat, or drink for days. We held him down every hour and syringed fluids into his mouth. We syringed Lortab every 4 hours, for 2 weeks straight. And when it got really bad, added ibuprofen. He literally laid on the couch for days and didn't move.
The turbinates caused his nose to bleed for 4-5 days after surgery. Each morning his sheets, clothes, and face would be covered with dried blood, along with my shirts because all he wanted was to be held.
Throughout the first week he would get up and attempt to play, but within a few minutes would usually lay down on the ground and begin to cry. So we would resort to watching Sesame Street or Cars.

Eating was a challenge because he doesn't like sweet things. (I'm hoping this will change) So all the popsicles, ice cream, applesauce or fruit, didn't tempt him. He doesn't like suckers, and wouldn't take the prescribed sucker that deadens the mouth. A few days after surgery, I finally gave him some bread, and he held on to it all day long. The next day, he actually sucked on it, and ate a little. For the rest of the week that is all he would consider putting into his mouth.
Day seven, he ate a bite of eggs, and thinly sliced cheese. I was over the moon!
And on day nine, I couldn't resist seeing his reaction to snow...he wasn't impressed.

Day 10, he found a little energy to play, and actually ate a whole meal. Since then, he's had an incredibly large appetite, bigger than it was before! Yay! And he's slowly attempting new foods, like a cupcake. I was shocked!
At his Dr appointment the Dr. noticed he had thrush, and told me to watch it carefully. It's now day 15 and he's still not sleeping well. He's up at least every two hours, and usually hysterical. We're all a little sleep deprived. But every day he's slowly improving, and I've been so grateful that I've had a little boy to cuddle. Two days ago, I noticed he was breathing through his nose while he drank from his sippy. That makes me sooo happy! I know it will all be worth it, and these three weeks will seem like nothing when looking back, but I wanted to have it recorded for the future.
Thank you to everyone who brought us dinner, treats, or gifts. You really helped us out, and our family is so grateful.
When my little boy had his tonsils and adenoids out he had a bad reaction to the steroids. He was hysterical during the night as well. Once the steroids SLOWlY left his body he slept like a rock. Hope Ledger recovers quickly
ReplyDeletePoor little guy! I feel your pain...2 of my kids had their tonsils and adenoids out a year ago last summer and it was pure hell for 2 weeks. There was nothing you could do to make them feel better. You really couldn't go anywhere or do anything. But it was the best thing we ever did! They haven't had strep in over a year and they breathe better! It is just a really tough recovery, but you guys made it!! Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteYou hurt so much more for your kids than for yourself. It is hard to see them in pain and especially when there is nothing much you can do to comfort them. But they still feel the love and care while they are feeling so miserable. I hope the healing process brings you much relief.
ReplyDeleteSo sad that it has been and is still rough! No sleep means ornery mom and dad, so I hope you get some sleep soon! And that Ledge continues to breathe through his nose :)
ReplyDeletePoor little guy. It seems so tough and for him, he doesn't understand why he feels so bad but it WILL get better and it WILL be worth it. Hang in there!

Man, I've had two sinus surgeries including fixing a deviated septum and messing with my turbinates and I can tell you that the turbinates were by far the worst! They didn't really hurt, but when they were healing they were completely swollen shut and I couldn't breathe at all! I mean, no air coming in or out of nose! That was way worse than being in pain. My poor son also had to have his tonsils taken out and of course, he caught some weird bug in the hospital and ended up having to be re-admitted for a totally different reason. It was awful! And trying to shove liquid Loritab down his throat was a battle every single time. By the time we were ready to leave the hospital, I was almost to the point of saying to my husband, "Well, hell - give me the damn bottle of Loritab!" Put me out of my misery! lol.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, it sounds like you have had a rough few weeks!! Wish I was closer and could have helped. Hopefully he will be a 100% just in time for Christmas goodies, maybe?!! Wish I didn't like sweet stuff. :)
