Yes that's right. I should have done this years ago.
Everyone knows how I feel about Pog. It's a love/hate relationship. She's definitely Pat's pride and joy, and we have our moments... good and bad.
Pugs shed. They shed too way too much in my opinion.
Last year I gave Pat the ultimatum. Goodbye Pog, or a new vacuum. He chose the vacuum. Though the vacuum tremendously helped, I've spent way too much time vacuuming.
Then Ledger came, and I couldn't handle the dog hair while he was crawling around.
A few weeks ago we went running at the Lake and saw a shaved pug. It's hair was incredibly short. Genius. Complete genius. I called the groomer, asked her about it and she said she shaves quite a few pugs on a regular basis. We waited weeks to get Pog in, and her appointment was on Friday. The groomer said the clippers traumatized Pog, but so does clipping her nails so we weren't surprised. Having her hair shaved makes me like her so much more already! Goodbye dog hair :)
P.S. For all of you who think this is cruel, I promise it's just like giving other dog haircuts. She's actually a much nicer dog right after she is cut.

Do you bathe her and brush her regularly? Because that's what all the shedding is from. If she's brushed every day and bathed once a week then her shedding shouldn't be as severe. (And those should be Pat's jobs, since they are lovers. :) ) My beagle is a major shedder too, but he gets brushed with a special rubber brush, which he loves, and a bath every week, and it's not a problem anymore because all the hair is on the brush and the rest gets shook out in the tub and not all over the house. Since I already have cats, hair is a major issue over here.
ReplyDeleteWe shave our pug to, have for years. Works wonders we do it about every 3 months. Yours will get used to the clippers.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry, but that is an awful thing to do to a Pug. I have one too, have for years, but you take the good with the bad. To say you do not like the dog truly makes makes wonder about you in general. I mean, come on! Dogs have been bred now to become our pets, Pugs were ALWAYS pets to royalty. Shaving a Pug is not right. BRUSH the dog, regularly, even daily in months that are heavier shedding months. I stayed at home for years with my children, and still had plenty of time to brush our dogs. And a little pug hair will not kill a child. You have the very best breed of dog for children to grow up with. Please, you try growing up, too.
ReplyDeleteyay for shaved dogs!!! i wish i could shave our dog. and you're right dog hair on babies is gross! glad you found something that'll work for you, dogs are fine to be shaved :).
ReplyDeletePerfect. Problem solved!
ReplyDeleteI have long had my dogs and cats shaved. It's win/win for all involved. My house stays cleaner and that makes me happy! I never deal with pet hair in the house. As far as brushing, I've always had collies and long haired cats. Brushing till the cows come home will not stop the shedding all over. A little hair cut is a small price to pay for them to get to live in a comfortable home!
ReplyDeleteWhat a blessing! Hope home is just that more pleasant!
ReplyDeleteOhh and hope you ignore Albie's comment and laugh it off.
Oh my word Albie, your comments are a little harsh. They're not torturing the dog for heck sakes, they just gave her a hair cut. With all that Pat and Ashley have been through in the last year you are questioning their character because they gave their dog a hair cut. Good Grief. I've known plenty of people that actually got rid of their dogs when they had kids because they didn't want to deal with the hair and other issues. They are still taking of the dog. I think you need to give them a break.
ReplyDeleteAlbie - a bit over the top, don't you think? the dog went to the groomer, not the pound! Let's give Ashley some credit for agreeing to do things that will make her more comfortable having an animal that she's not 100% thrilled about in her home.
ReplyDeleteAshley - good for you for finding a workable solution! That's great! We have always kept pets groomed regularly to keep the hair to a minimum - helps a lot!
I LOVED this post! I also have a female pug named Lexie. I was laughing so hard at this post because while it doesn't bother me too much, okay it does, but I love her too much to be too mad, my husband cannot stand the hair. I'll have to tell him about this. I'm thinking Lexie would be way creeped by the clippers too.
ReplyDeleteAlbie, Sheesh, just because someone doesn't absolutely love dogs, doesn't mean they are awful people. Ashley is just trying to make the best of her situation for heaven's sake. Having worked for a veterinarian for over 10 years, let me assure you that clippers won't hurt their dog!! We have had one dog and will never have another. I'm not a dog lover and that's okay! The Sullengers should be able to do whatever works for them without criticism. Oh, and by the way, dog hair on babies grosses me out too!
ReplyDeleteI get my pug shaved and it is a blessing. I have a standing appt for every three weeks. The coat will come in really think now that you have started this. Just a little warning. Don't they look like little puppies with the shave?
ReplyDeleteHave a great summer with your new little baby. He is so sweet.
I agree that your solution was genius. I am not a lover of dog hair or animal hair in general. We had a corgi before we found out our kids were allergic to her, and my solution was to do the same thing, shave her. The vet told me it was perfectly fine. You do what works for your family. Albie can do what works for Albie.
ReplyDeleteI always shaved my Shih Tzus in the summer and although a Pug typically isn't a breed that generally requires shaving, there's certainly no harm in it,and whatever makes life easier, right?
ReplyDeleteIt never fails though:whenever you post anything about pets the animal-freaks start coming out of the woodwork to hassle you. Just ignore them; they care more about animals than about people, anyway.
she almost looks like a big puppy now!! and she doesnt look weird at all shaved!!
ReplyDeleteThe picture isn't showing up. It said that you deleted this picture from your photobucket.
ReplyDeleteMost of my clients are pugs, labrador retriever and bulldogs. Some dogs shed year-round, some "blow" seasonally -- produce a snowstorm of loose hair -- some do both, and some shed hardly at all. If you're a neatnik you'll need either to hire us http://www.AnyHouseCleaning.com or relax your standards. lol
