On the 13th I turned 23. To most of you it sounds young, but to me it sounds old. Probably because I'm starting to feel like the oldest on campus when I sit next to freshman in my math class who really do think I'm old.
Yesterday I woke up early to finish some homework and went to class. Three of my really good friends greeted me with a present and enough cookies for the entire class and led the class in singing Happy Birthday. (That's always kind of awkward) After Math methods, the three of us went to lunch at the new restaurant in town called Sammy's. None of us had been there before and we had a blast. It was fun because we rarely ever do anything outside of class together. I thoroughly enjoyed the battered fries. We ended the meal with pictures and a pumpkin cheesecake shake. Yum!

Six more weeks before we all go our separate ways!
I had math at 2:00 PM and an hour later was free for the day! When I arrived home some of my friends dropped by. I was given a delicious Birthday cake (Pat was excited because he didn't have to attempt to make one) and this very creative treat.
Rice Crispy cake on the bottom, kit-kats surrounding it, filled with m&m's.
Pat decided I didn't need to cook :) He even let me pick the restaurant! I of course picked Cafe Rio, much to his displeasure (it makes him sick) but he was a good sport. My mom came alone because my dad had a temple trip planned for his ward, and as Bishop he couldn't skip out. The three of us had fun with great food. We then headed back to the house, cut the cake and hung out for the night.
Family was very very generous with their gifts, thank you. I was given two tickets to see Les Miserables in SLC! Some cash to put towards clothing for student teaching ... skinny jeans aren't allowed.
Back in May for Mother's Day Pat and Pres gave me running shoes. I've had the same red and white adidas shoes since I was a sophomore in High School. I've put a lot of miles on those babies. Pat tells me it's time to get rid of them. So he surprised me with Nike's. Well, they fit really weird and I ended up sending them back. I hadn't thought much about it. Well, Pat took the time and effort to actually design me some shoes. Yes, that's right, that's how bad he dislikes my shoes. So here they are, I must admit they are really comfortable. I've never seen the zig-zag before, so they're fun.
He also gave me a new digital camera :) Our old one was trashed. He definitely spoiled me.
Then today, the 14th, was my day at the Middle School. I was correcting papers thirty minutes before school was let out, when one of the fifth graders asked to escort me up to the "hot seat." She linked her arm in mine and walked me up to the front of the room. As I glanced at the students they were deathly quiet and I saw 32 pairs of eyes excitedly staring back at me. I took a seat and what happened next was was so very sweet. I was given a book by my coordinating teacher called, The Lesson, A Fable of Hope, by Carol Lynn Pearson. A really amazing little book. All the students wrote inside. When I got home and opened it I couldn't help but cry. I didn't know they knew about Preslee, but so many of them wrote such sweet encouraging words to me. It was another humbling moment. They sang their fancy version of Happy Birthday to me, pulled out boxes of doughnuts and apple juice and I blew out candles. I was shocked when quite a few students brought up presents for me! I can't believe how sweet these kids are. I received homemade jam, treats, candles, personal cards, and a Cocoa Bean cupcake :) Mrs. T arranged the kids behind me and we took a couple group pictures. If you want to have fun celebrating your Birthday, do it with 32 fifth graders! I love being around kids, everything is so exciting to them. I've been blessed to be placed in such a great class, they honestly are the most well behaved group of students I've ever seen. Six weeks in and not one of them has taken me on.
Thanks again for all the sweet messages yesterday and today. We are still grateful for your support. Though it doesn't take the pain away, it's easier to carry the load with all of you behind us!:)
Happy birthday Ashley! I think you would be amazed at how many people feel so close to you, even if you hardly know them. You're blog has been kind of a life line for me, and you will never know how inspiring you are to me. In fact, as you were typing this post, I was typing a post about you on my own blog. Thank you for your story, I only wish I could make everything better over night. Oh, and thanks for bringing me a little piece of Rexburg with every post, I miss it!
ReplyDeleteASH!!! I'm so happy I got to celebrate part of your birthday with you. I am so grateful that I get to see you twice a week :) Love you girl!

ReplyDeleteI have a lot of fifth graders in my neighborhood including my daughter Kylee who is in Mr. Durfee's class. They all know who you are and what you have been through the past couple of months. They tell me when they see you. They love you and hope to make your life a little easier with smiles and kind words. You are a strength to so many. We hope these precious kids can be a strength to you at hard moments during the day. Hang in there. MIchelle Christensen. Oh! and happy birthday. It looks like it was a good one.

Happy Birthday, Ashley! I'm glad you got spoiled on your special day; you definitely deserve it! :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't Sammy's the best! That's the place I was talking about at Zumba. Glad you had a great birthday, your running shoes look awesome, but I must admit I kinda miss seeing the red shoes you wore at your basketball games but these pink ones will replace wonderfully.
ReplyDeleteYou got tickets to Les Mes?!!! Awesome!!! I work at the Capitol Theatre part time as an EMT for the shows! You will have to let me know when your tickets are! I will probably be working that night! It's in May of next year right? Congrats!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute cake and adorable shoes as well! I am glad that you had a GREAT day! I hope there are many more to come!!!
Happy birthday! I'm glad you had a nice day. :)
ReplyDeleteI know a little what you mean when you say 23 feels old. By the time I was 23 I had been married for five years, had put my husband through undergrad and graduate school, had lost four babies and given birth once. I had a lot of life already under my belt.
Though your experience far outweighs my own, I get it. :)
We lost our daughter 6 years ago when she was 12 days old...I still wonder what it all means, but to have to try to figure that out when you are so young...my heart goes out to you and your sweet husband. I love Carol Lyn Pearson and that is a beautiful book!
ReplyDeleteYour story is inspiring, thank you.
i just found your blog from a friends, & am so glad i did. your story is amazing & your strength is incredibly inspiring! we're lds, & i often think about how major life tragedies either make or break a person & a couple, it is amazing to see how you've put this all in perspective. i will be back to your blog often!!
ReplyDeleteyou sound super busy, but stop by my site sometime if you'd like :)

No wonder I felt a connection to you (besides the fact that I went to high school with your parents -- they are a bit younger than I). October 13th is the most rocking birthday ever. I'm glad you had a great birthday. Many happy returns!!!
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine had a stillborn baby in 2008, and now whenever they take family pictures they always include a white rose to remember the perfect family member who isn't there. I know you will never forget your angel baby, but that way others will always be reminded of her too. Just a thought...
ReplyDeleteI never comment on stranger's blogs. kinda creepy right? Well it seems you have had about a million more like me blog stalking you and obsessed with your family. I have so many things to say, but this you know. I too am a mom so we have the same heart. :)
ReplyDeleteI blogged about your blog one day after your post about olives on your Subway sandwich. It just hit home for me... the little things, the habits... Well I shared your story with a friend who also has been following your blog. A non-member, but mother as well.
Ashley, she is having a baby. A baby she is naming Preslee. Because it's a cute name yes, but also because your daughter is what every mother ever dreams in their own little girl. And Preslee Jo is our little hero :)
Happy birthday !! You are in my prayers. You have beautiful things waiting for you!
ReplyDeleteYay Ash! It's good to know that you had a great Birthday! I love the shoes that Pat designed for you they rock!! & How sweet is that of 5th graders! You are loved by everyone you have met! You have such a sweet spirit about you.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday you gorgeous gorgeous girl! I wish I was 23...sadly I turned 32 this year! :) But I just figure that for every year that passes...it's just one more closer to our little Jackson right?! :) Loved the shoes. You have a GREAT little hubby there. You'll have to let us know (promise I'm not a crazy stalker or anything) when you come to town for Les Mis...I'm pretty sure we have tickets too. If Pat could bare it....we'll take you to Cafe Rio??!!
ReplyDeleteTiff Rich
